wabi sabi

I have been trying to finish a book I stole/borrowed from my daughter wabi sabi – the Japanese art of impermanence by Andrew Juniper. I wish I had come across  this when I was writing my PhD in Rejectamenta. Anyway there is an interesting quote in it (page 121).

“It is nearly impossible to clearly define wabi and sabi. Maybe one could say that it is living unselfishly with our fellow men without desire for profit, resisting ideas of self importance or status, and humbly accepting our position in life… Wabi sabi is the aesthetic that comes naturally from this attitude…”

 Prior to this statement it lists all the aspects of wabi sabi that should/could/can be considered when creating wabi sabi inspired  “art”. I have summarised them here for Ellie! These include:

* Materials to show wear and tear (accretion and erosion measures which I did actually write about in my PhD) to be natural, unassuming, textural and subdued in tone and colour.

* Sense of balance, yet exploring asymmetry and randomness.

* Beauty in the details as a result of imperfections.

* A lack of ostentation.

* The importance of space and a sense of  “nothingness” (p 116)

* Minimum of materials and marks. Pared down, honest and functional.

* “Pieces that are intimate and personal” (p120)

All interesting stuff.

A different type of work in progress.

“The transition toward a simpler lifestyle, fraught as it is with difficulty, is a path only for those with a resolution to travels its length knowing that it is a path without end, yet a path with heart. ”  (p160 wabi sabi – the Japanese art of impermanence)
